HIPPS System is the safety element of the plant on protection against over pressure hazard, closing it within seconds as safety relief valve; a typical system usually present 2 or 3 final elements in series and prepares the shutdown within seconds, depending on the pipeline presure, flow rate and diameter and class of the pipeline
The system is designed according to Safety Requirements Specifications IEC 61508 (functional safety of electrical/electronic/programmable electronic safety related system) and IEC 615111 (functional safety: safety instrumented system for the process industry sector); certified up to SIL 3 & SIL 4, also by Third Party upon Customer request.
Relief system are used in traditional systems to handle over-pressure source releasing the service fluid (flammable and toxic) in the environment. This large amount of fuggitive gases is annually burnt and released into the atmosphere. It is essential to reduce flare emission to protect the environment. In this sense, HIPPS systems avoid fluid released out of the system keeping the environment free of gas emissions.
